Dry skin on the hairline

The hairline is exposed to shampoo, conditioner, styling products, sweat, hats, and friction. Residue can irritate the skin or leave visible flakes, while the source may be on the scalp rather than the hairline itself. Atopic dermatitis can cause itchy, sensitive patches. Psoriasis may form a more defined, thicker scale that extends beyond the hairline. Asteatotic eczema causes pronounced dryness and cracking, though the pattern and setting differ between people. Product timing and whether the scalp, ears, eyebrows, or neck are also affected can help a clinician identify the cause.

Rinse shampoo and conditioner thoroughly, avoid fragranced or newly added styling products, and keep hats and helmet liners clean. Wash with lukewarm water rather than very hot water. Apply a small amount of fragrance-free moisturiser to dry skin at the edge of the hairline, keeping it away from the eyes and avoiding heavy application onto the scalp if it feels greasy. Do not scrape flakes or use multiple medicated products at once without guidance. A simple emollient routine can reduce tightness while you watch the pattern.

See a clinician if the area remains flaky after removing likely irritants, extends onto the face or scalp, bleeds, becomes painful, or causes significant itch. Prompt care is appropriate for rapid swelling, warmth, pus, spreading redness, or eye involvement.
