Dry skin on the eyelid: what to know

Eyelid dryness may cause fine scale, itch, tightness, redness, or stinging. Triggers can include eye makeup, remover, nail products transferred by touch, contact-lens solutions, hair products, and fragranced skincare. Atopic Dermatitis and Asteatotic Eczema are possible causes; Psoriasis can also affect eyelid skin. A rash near the eye is not always ordinary dryness, especially when it is new or confined to one side.

Stop new eye-area products and avoid rubbing. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, keep cleanser out of the eye, and pat the lids dry. A tiny amount of plain emollient may be suitable on the eyelid skin if it does not enter the eye, but avoid applying medicated creams near the eye unless prescribed. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses if they worsen stinging or watering.

Arrange review for persistent, recurrent, crusted, painful, or one-sided eyelid changes. Seek urgent care for vision changes, severe eye pain, marked swelling, light sensitivity, pus, fever, or swelling that affects opening the eye. Do not assume a rash is harmless because it is small; the eye itself needs attention when symptoms extend beyond the skin.

Ask whether contact allergy is possible, which products should be stopped, whether an eyelid-safe moisturiser is appropriate, and whether the eye surface needs examination.
