What should you know about dry skin newborn scalp?

A newborn's scalp can shed fine skin and appear dry or flaky, especially after washing or exposure to a dry environment. Crusty or greasy scale may have a different explanation from simple dryness. Atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory conditions can affect infants, but a label cannot be made from photographs or scale alone. Note whether the skin is itchy, red, cracked, wet, swollen or sore, and whether the baby is feeding and behaving normally.

Do not scrape attached scale or use adult dandruff products without advice. The fontanelle is protected by skin, but the scalp should still be handled gently.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free baby cleanser when needed, then pat the scalp dry with a soft towel. A small amount of plain emollient may help loosen dry scale if a healthcare professional agrees it is suitable for your baby. Keep nails short, avoid picking, and stop any product that causes redness or stinging. Do not apply essential oils, medicated creams or thick products near the face without professional guidance.

Contact a clinician promptly if the scalp becomes hot, increasingly red, swollen, painful, cracked or oozy, or if there is a bad smell or pus. Seek urgent advice if the baby has a fever, is unusually sleepy, feeds poorly or seems unwell. Arrange a routine review when flaking persists, spreads beyond the scalp or keeps returning despite gentle care.
