Dry Skin and Jock Itch: What to Know

Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, is a fungal infection affecting groin skin. It commonly causes itch, scale, redness, and a border that may extend along the inner thigh. Friction, sweat, tight clothing, and shared towels can help irritation persist. As the surface becomes scaly or starts to settle, it may be described as dry skin.

An itchy groin is not always jock itch. Contact irritation, eczema, and other rashes can look similar, while involvement of the scrotal skin or unusual pain may point to another cause. Diagnosis matters because moisturiser does not remove a fungal infection.

Keep the groin clean and dry, wash gently, and pat rather than rub. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of damp garments. Do not share towels, and wash clothing and towels regularly. Avoid scratching, shaving over the rash, and applying steroid cream on your own, because it can alter the appearance of a fungal infection.
