Short answer

Dry skin after sunburn is a sign of surface injury and moisture loss; peeling, tightness and tenderness can follow as the skin recovers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why sunburn dries the skin

Ultraviolet exposure injures skin cells and disrupts the outer barrier. The affected area may feel hot, tight or sore before it becomes flaky. Peeling skin is not a signal to pull the surface away; new skin underneath remains sensitive. If dryness continues after the burn settles, another issue such as Asteatotic Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis may be contributing. [Dry Skin](/symptoms/dry-skin/) describes the symptom more broadly.

Comfort and protect the area

Take cool showers or use cool damp cloths, then pat gently. Apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment while the skin is slightly damp; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) explains moisture-barrier care. Drink normally, avoid further sun on the area and cover it with loose clothing. Do not peel flakes, break blisters, scrub, or apply products containing fragrance, alcohol or numbing ingredients if they sting. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief.

When to seek urgent help

Get medical help for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, fainting or signs of dehydration. Eye pain or vision change after sun exposure needs urgent assessment. Arrange a review if the skin is not improving, becomes increasingly red and warm, or develops pus. Children, older adults and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier advice.

Questions to ask

Is the burn superficial or does it need treatment for blistering? Which moisturiser and pain-relief option fit my skin and medicines? How should I protect the area from more ultraviolet exposure, and could persistent dryness indicate eczema or another condition?

Questions people ask

Should I peel sunburned skin?

No. Let loose skin shed naturally and moisturise gently to reduce friction.

Can I go back into the sun when it feels better?

Protect the recovering area with clothing and shade because recently injured skin remains sensitive even after discomfort fades.
