Dry skin at the edge of the mouth: what to know

The skin beside the lips is exposed to saliva, food, toothpaste, cosmetics and repeated movement. Licking the area can briefly soothe tightness but increases moisture loss as saliva evaporates. Rinse gently after meals and pat dry. Apply a bland fragrance-free ointment as a protective layer, particularly before sleep and after washing. Avoid licking, scrubbing, fragranced lip products and toothpaste that causes burning. Introduce one product at a time so a trigger is easier to recognise. Do not apply leftover steroid or antibiotic cream close to the lips unless a clinician has given specific instructions.

Book an appointment if the change persists, repeatedly returns, spreads beyond the mouth or makes eating uncomfortable. Get prompt medical help for marked swelling, pus, rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe pain, blisters near the eyes or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Crusting or painful splits at the corners may need targeted treatment rather than moisturiser alone.
