Dry skin eczema on hands: what to know

Hand eczema develops when the outer skin barrier loses moisture and becomes easier to irritate. Soaps, detergents, solvents, frequent wet work, cold air and friction can all contribute. Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a thick moisturising cream or ointment immediately after washing and whenever the skin feels tight; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) explains this approach. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft cotton layer underneath if sweating is not a problem. Do not pick peeling skin or use strong steroid, antibiotic or antifungal products without advice.

Arrange a medical review if the rash keeps returning, interferes with sleep or work, or does not settle with careful moisturising. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain or deep cracks that bleed. These features can signal infection or a more active inflammatory condition.
