Dry skin after sunburn: what to know

A sunburn injures surface cells. As the skin repairs itself, the damaged layer may become tight, dry, itchy, and flaky before shedding. Peeling is not a reason to pull the skin away; doing so can expose tender tissue and increase irritation. Ongoing dryness outside the burned area, repeated flares, or thick scaly patches may point to another problem such as [Asteatotic Eczema](/conditions/asteatotic-eczema/) or [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), which needs an examination rather than guesswork.

Use cool compresses or a cool shower, then pat dry without rubbing. Avoid peeling, scrubbing, fragranced products, and further direct sun. Wear loose clothing and cover the area outdoors. Do not apply products to open blisters unless a clinician has advised you how to protect them.

Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, signs of infection, significant swelling, fever, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, or difficulty drinking. Prompt review is also sensible if the burn involves the eyes, face, hands, or genitals, or if the skin is not improving.
