Dry skin above the upper lip: what to know

This area is exposed to saliva, food, tissues, masks, cosmetics, and hair-removal products. Repeated wetting and drying can leave the skin tight, flaky, burning, or cracked. A rash around the mouth can also be a form of dermatitis rather than simple dryness.

Atopic dermatitis can cause itch and dryness in people with a sensitive skin barrier. Asteatotic eczema is very dry and may crack, while psoriasis can produce persistent, defined scale. Rinse gently after eating, pat instead of wiping, and apply a thin layer of bland fragrance-free moisturiser to the skin. Avoid scrubs, fragranced balms, strong acne products, and hair removal until the area is calm. Do not lick or peel the flakes. Arrange a dermatology review if the area lasts, repeatedly returns, spreads around the mouth, becomes painful, or develops crusting or clustered bumps. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing.
