What should you know about dry scaly skin in ears?

Scaling on the outer ear may follow dry weather, contact irritation, headphones, or an inflammatory condition. Seborrheic Dermatitis can affect the ear folds and canal entrance, and Psoriasis may involve the scalp and ears together. Ringworm is less common in this location but can cause a defined scaly border. Tinea Versicolor usually affects other body areas rather than the ear canal. Scratching, cotton swabs, and attempts to remove wax can damage the canal lining and worsen flaking.

The canal is easily injured, so a clinician may need to look inside before recommending drops or creams. Skin scaling alone does not establish an infection.

Clean only the outer ear with a soft damp cloth and dry it gently. Keep water, shampoo, and fragranced products out of the canal, and avoid cotton swabs, earbuds, and scratching while irritated. A bland moisturiser can be used on dry outer skin, not deep inside the ear. Do not use antifungal or steroid products in the canal unless prescribed for that site.

Arrange care for persistent itch, pain, blocked sensation, recurrent scaling, or symptoms after swimming. Seek prompt assessment for discharge, bleeding, fever, marked swelling, severe pain, dizziness, or reduced hearing. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice earlier for new ear symptoms.
