What should you know about dry scaly skin behind ears?

Seborrheic Dermatitis often affects the crease behind the ear and may also cause scale on the scalp, brows, or nose. Psoriasis can extend from the scalp onto the hairline and ear folds. Ringworm may be more one-sided, with an enlarging edge, while Tinea Versicolor tends to cause fine scale and altered colour on other areas. Water, sweat, hair products, glasses, masks, or headphone friction can irritate the fold. Cracks, tenderness, discharge, or an unpleasant smell suggest that the skin barrier needs examination.

A clinician checks whether the scale is greasy or dry, whether both sides are involved, and whether the scalp or ear canal is affected.

Wash gently, rinse away shampoo thoroughly, and dry the crease by patting. Apply a bland moisturiser to intact outer skin; avoid putting creams into the ear canal. Pause fragranced hair products and reduce rubbing from devices or mask straps. Do not lift adherent scale or use leftover prescription medicine, especially if the area is cracked or weeping.

Book an assessment if the area repeatedly cracks, bleeds, oozes, smells, becomes painful, or does not settle with gentle care. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, or new hearing changes. Ear-canal pain or discharge should be assessed rather than treated with skin products.
