What should you know about dry scaly rash?

Dryness and scaling can follow irritation from soaps, friction, sweat, or a new product. Inflamed conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, or Psoriasis may produce itchy, rough plaques. Heat Rash can occur where sweat collects, while Intertrigo affects skin folds and may become sore. Ringworm often forms an expanding, scaly edge; Scabies can cause marked itching, especially at night, and may affect household contacts. A Drug Rash deserves attention when it begins after a new medicine.

A clinician considers the rash distribution, surface, colour, symptoms, recent exposures, and medicines. These details distinguish causes that can look alike.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a plain moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp, and pause newly introduced cosmetics or fragranced products. Keep sweaty areas cool and dry, avoid scratching, and do not share towels or clothing if an infection is possible. Photograph the rash and note when it started, where it spread, and any new product, medicine, illness, or travel.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, persistent, recurrent, painful, oozing, crusted, or interfering with sleep. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, widespread purple spots, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or involvement of the eyes or mouth.
