Dry, scaly bumps on the skin: possible causes

Dry skin can make the surface rough, tight, and flaky, especially after bathing or exposure to dry air. Asteatotic eczema may form cracked, net-like areas on very dry skin. Atopic dermatitis often brings itch, redness, and recurrent patches, while psoriasis may produce thicker, well-defined scale. New soaps, fabrics, medicines, or cosmetics can trigger contact irritation.

Record where the bumps began, whether they itch or hurt, and whether they spread, ooze, crack, or recur. Skin colour changes after inflammation can linger even after the active rash settles.

Keep showers brief and lukewarm, use a gentle cleanser only where needed, and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser soon after patting the skin dry. Choose loose, breathable clothing and avoid scrubbing or picking. If moisturising does not settle the area, a clinician can assess whether emollient therapy or another treatment is suitable.

Arrange an assessment when bumps persist, spread quickly, become painful, form blisters, ooze, or interfere with sleep. Seek prompt care for facial or eye swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. A changing single bump, bleeding, or a sore that does not heal also deserves examination.

Ask whether the pattern fits dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis; which ingredients to avoid; and whether a treatment is needed for itch, inflammation, or infection.
