What should you know about dry peeling nails with ridges?

Vertical ridges can become more noticeable when nails are dry or brittle. Peeling at the free edge may follow frequent hand washing, detergents, picking, biting, filing, or cycles of soaking and drying. A single damaged nail may reflect local injury, while several affected nails can point to a shared exposure or skin problem. Nail fungus may cause thickening, crumbling, discolouration, or separation, but ridges and peeling do not establish that diagnosis by themselves. A clinician may inspect the nail and surrounding skin and take a sample when infection is suspected.

Keep nails short and smooth sharp edges with a fine file in one direction. Wear gloves for cleaning and prolonged water exposure, using cotton liners if sweating is an issue. Massage a bland moisturiser or ointment into nails and cuticles after washing. Do not peel loose layers, cut cuticles, or use acetone and hardening products while the nail is splitting. Give damaged nails time to grow out and note whether the change affects one nail or many.

Book an assessment if nail changes persist, spread to other nails, or interfere with daily tasks. Seek earlier care for pain, swelling, drainage, marked tenderness, a dark streak, sudden separation, or skin inflammation around the nail.
