What should you know about dry out runny nose?

The nose can produce extra fluid while its surface feels dry, tight or sore. Air conditioning, dust, smoke, strong fragrances and frequent wiping can disturb the lining. Allergic Rhinitis may cause watery discharge, sneezing and itching, while a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 can bring congestion, throat symptoms or fever. Sinusitis may add facial pressure and thicker mucus. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy are possible when symptoms follow exposure to a particular indoor trigger. A symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Sip fluids and use a saline nasal spray or rinse to loosen mucus and add moisture; use sterile or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse. Apply a bland moisturising product only as directed for nasal use, and avoid picking or forceful blowing. Reduce smoke, dust and scented products, and consider a humidifier if indoor air is very dry. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels if an infection seems possible. A pharmacist can help you choose a suitable product, especially for a child, pregnancy or other medical condition.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, severe weakness, or a severe headache with a stiff neck. Arrange medical review for repeated nosebleeds, one-sided discharge with a bad smell, significant facial pain, persistent fever, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Ask for advice if dryness continues despite removing irritants or if prescribed nasal medicines seem to make the lining sore.
