Dry nose and sneezing: what should you know?

Dry indoor air, air conditioning, dust, smoke, fragrance, and frequent nose blowing can irritate the nasal lining. Allergic rhinitis presents with sneezing and often an itchy or runny nose; house dust mite allergy and pet allergy can trigger symptoms around particular environments. A common cold may begin with sneezing and later bring congestion, sore throat, cough, or feeling unwell. Crusting, soreness, or a blocked nostril can point to local irritation. The symptoms alone cannot confirm an allergy or infection.

Avoid smoke and strongly scented products, and reduce dust exposure where possible. Saline nasal spray or rinse can moisturise and clear irritants; use sterile or previously boiled and cooled water for a home rinse. Blow your nose gently and avoid picking. Drink regularly and consider an allergy diary that records rooms, pets, cleaning, seasons, and other exposures. A pharmacist can explain whether allergy medication is appropriate, particularly if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, repeatedly disturb sleep, affect breathing, or remain mainly on one side. Arrange prompt care for facial swelling, severe facial pain, high fever, wheezing, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Emergency help is needed for serious breathing difficulty. A clinician can inspect the nasal lining and consider allergy, infection, medication effects, or another cause.
