Dry needling and cupping: what to know

During dry needling, a trained clinician places a sterile, single-use needle into a selected muscle or sensitive point. The aim may be to reduce muscle irritability, ease movement or support an exercise plan. Cupping places cups on the skin and uses suction; it can leave temporary circular marks and tenderness.

These approaches may be considered for muscle-related pain, including myofascial pain or a back spasm, after the clinician has checked that the symptoms fit. They do not establish the cause of pain, repair every tissue injury or guarantee relief.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicine, a bleeding disorder, pregnancy, immune problems, skin infection, poor wound healing, diabetes or fear of needles. Ask which area will be treated, what sensation is expected and how the technique will be combined with movement or strengthening.

Use a qualified practitioner who explains consent, hygiene and aftercare. Mild soreness or a small bruise can occur. Keep the area clean, follow the agreed activity plan and report symptoms that are unusually intense or do not settle.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, rapidly increasing swelling, severe allergic symptoms or weakness that appears suddenly. Contact a clinician about spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, persistent bleeding, severe pain or new numbness after treatment.
