Dry mouth and swollen lips: what to know

Dry mouth can follow not drinking enough, mouth breathing, stress, or medicines that reduce saliva. Lip swelling can arise from irritation, contact with a product, dental problems, or deeper tissue swelling. Angioedema can affect the lips and may appear with hives or swelling elsewhere. Dry mouth and swelling may have separate causes, so timing, new medicines, foods, dental products, and breathing symptoms are useful details.

Sip water regularly, avoid alcohol-based mouthwash and smoking, and choose a bland lip barrier on the outer lips. Stop any newly introduced lip, dental, or cosmetic product until the cause is clearer. Do not stop prescribed medicine without medical advice, but record its name and when it was started. Check the swelling periodically and keep someone nearby if it is changing quickly.

Get emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt medical assessment for rapidly increasing lip swelling, widespread hives, facial swelling, severe mouth pain, or swelling after a food or medicine. Persistent dry mouth also warrants review, particularly when it causes difficulty eating, speaking, or sleeping.
