Dry mouth and runny nose: what should you know?

Dry mouth with a runny nose often reflects nasal irritation, mouth breathing, infection, allergy, medicines or reduced fluid intake. The combination does not identify one condition by itself. Notice whether the discharge is clear or coloured, whether you have fever or facial pressure, and whether the mouth dryness began after a new medicine.

Allergic rhinitis, including reactions to house dust mites or pets, commonly causes a clear runny nose, sneezing and an itchy nose. A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 may add tiredness, cough, fever or body aches. A blocked nose can make you breathe through your mouth, drying saliva and the throat. Sinusitis is more suggestive when congestion comes with facial pain, reduced smell or thick drainage.

Sip water regularly and use sugar-free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva. Saline nasal spray and gentle steam may ease nasal irritation; avoid smoke and strongly scented products. Check medicine leaflets for dry mouth as a side effect, but do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Rest and wash your hands if an infection is possible. A clinician can examine your nose and mouth and decide whether testing or targeted treatment is useful.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, fainting, or inability to swallow fluids. Arrange medical assessment if symptoms are worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, you develop severe facial pain, or dry mouth persists with mouth sores or difficulty eating. People with significant medical conditions, older adults and young children may need earlier advice.
