Dry lips and itchy skin: what to know

Cold air, dry indoor air, frequent washing, saliva, fragranced products, and new cosmetics can affect both the lips and the skin barrier. Atopic dermatitis may cause recurring itch and dryness, while contact dermatitis can follow exposure to a particular product. Hives tend to produce raised, itchy areas that come and go. Scabies often causes intense itch with a pattern that affects close contacts as well. Crusting, moist patches, or skin-fold involvement may need assessment for infection.

Use a bland, fragrance-free ointment on the outer lips and dry areas. Keep showers brief and lukewarm, use a gentle cleanser only where needed, and moisturise immediately after patting dry. Stop newly introduced soaps, cosmetics, detergents, and supplements one at a time where practical. Avoid scratching, hot water, and fragranced oils. Wash hands after applying products and note whether anyone close to you has new itching.

Arrange a review if itching lasts, spreads, disturbs sleep, or causes cracks, bleeding, blisters, crusting, or open skin. Seek prompt care for fever, painful warmth, pus, rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, or eye involvement. Emergency help is needed for breathing trouble, throat tightness, or tongue swelling.

Ask: Could one product be affecting my lips and skin? Does the pattern suggest eczema, contact dermatitis, hives, infection, or scabies? What should I stop using? Which moisturiser or treatment is appropriate, and should close contacts be checked?
