Dry itchy swollen lips: what to know

Lip skin is sensitive and can react to saliva, licking, cold air, toothpaste, lip products, medicines, or foods. Dryness can lead to cracking and itch, while swelling suggests additional inflammation. Angioedema is a form of deeper swelling that can affect the lips and may occur with hives or other allergic symptoms. The timing matters: note anything newly eaten, applied, or taken before the swelling began.

Stop any new lip product and rinse the mouth gently if a product may have triggered irritation. Use a bland, fragrance-free barrier ointment on the outer lips, avoid licking or biting them, and choose cool drinks if warmth worsens discomfort. Do not apply medicated creams or essential oils to the lips unless a clinician recommends them. Keep a record of possible triggers and whether the swelling is increasing.

Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling occurs with trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, widespread hives, blistering, severe pain, or swelling after a medicine or food. Even without breathing symptoms, recurring swelling deserves assessment.
