Dry itchy skin on the scalp

Flaking after a new shampoo, dye, relaxer, or styling product can indicate irritation or Contact Dermatitis. Greasy scale around the scalp, ears, or eyebrows can occur with dandruff-related inflammation. Thick, sharply defined scale may occur with Psoriasis, while Atopic Dermatitis can cause persistent itch and sensitivity. Broken hairs, tender bumps, crusting, or smooth areas of hair loss need examination because infection or another scalp disorder may be involved.

Stop recently introduced hair products and wash with lukewarm water using a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo. Rinse thoroughly, avoid scratching and tight hairstyles, and keep nails short. Do not pick scale or apply household oils, steroid lotions, or medicated products near the eyes without guidance. If flakes continue, a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a medicated shampoo is suitable and how long to use it.

Arrange prompt review for painful areas, pus, thick crusts, fever, swollen glands, spreading redness, or new hair loss. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing trouble after a hair product. Persistent itch, bleeding from scratching, or a rash affecting the ears and face also deserves assessment.
