Dry, itchy skin around the female genital area

The vulval skin can react to scented washes, wipes, pads, detergents, lubricants, or tight clothing. Contact dermatitis often follows exposure and may sting as well as itch. Atopic dermatitis can cause dry, sensitive patches elsewhere too. A skin yeast infection may produce vivid redness, soreness, or moist irritation. Psoriasis and lichen planus can affect genital skin, sometimes with colour or texture changes. Scabies is more likely when night-time itch and affected household contacts are present.

Dryness on the outside is different from discharge or internal vaginal symptoms. Avoid diagnosing yourself from itch alone; a clinician may inspect the skin and ask about products, menstrual care, sexual health, medicines, and other affected areas.

Wash the external area with lukewarm water or a bland, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Stop scented products and avoid douching. Choose loose, breathable underwear, change out of damp clothing, and use a plain protective moisturiser on external skin if it does not sting. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching.

Do not place steroid, antifungal, antiseptic, or perfumed products inside the vagina unless prescribed. Treatment depends on the cause, and repeated self-treatment can prolong irritation or obscure examination findings.

Book a medical review for symptoms that persist, recur, or affect sleep, or for new pale, thickened, cracked, bleeding, or ulcerated skin. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, blisters, or painful urination. New discharge, an unpleasant odour, or symptoms after sexual contact also warrant an appropriate assessment.

Ask whether the itch is coming from vulval skin or the vagina, which products to stop, whether testing is needed, and which treatment is safe for external skin and any pregnancy or breastfeeding situation.
