Dry itchy eyes at night: what to know

Bedroom dust, mites, pet dander, bedding, fans, and air conditioning can irritate the eye surface. Overnight, you blink less and tears may spread less evenly, so a scratchy or burning feeling can become more noticeable. Allergic conjunctivitis may cause itching, watering, redness, and puffy lids; nasal congestion or sneezing can point toward allergic rhinitis. Itchy eyes are a common presentation of these allergic conditions, but the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Keep the room free of smoke and strong fragrances, and avoid directing a fan or vent at your face. Wash hands before touching your eyes, remove contact lenses as directed, and use a cool clean compress over closed lids. Preservative-free lubricating drops may soothe dryness when used according to their label. Do not rub your eyes, share eye drops, or use leftover prescription drops. If symptoms follow contact with a pet or dusty bedding, reduce that exposure and note whether the pattern changes.

Arrange a medical review if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, or do not settle with simple measures. Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, marked redness, a sudden change in vision, injury, chemical exposure, or strong light sensitivity. A swollen eyelid with fever, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue needs urgent help.
