Dry, itchy eyes from allergies: what to know

Allergies can make eyes itchy, watery and dry-feeling when inflammation irritates the eye surface and surrounding tissues. The same exposure may also cause sneezing, a runny nose or itchy skin. Eye symptoms often flare after contact with a trigger, but dryness and itching can have non-allergic causes too.

Allergic Conjunctivitis is an eye response that may cause itching, redness and watering. Allergic Rhinitis can accompany it with nasal symptoms. House Dust Mite Allergy may be worse in bedrooms or dusty spaces, while Pet Allergy may follow contact with an animal or its environment. A pattern that follows exposure is useful information, but it does not prove which allergen is responsible.

Avoid rubbing your eyes and use a cool compress over closed lids. Wash your face after outdoor exposure, keep bedroom fabrics clean, and reduce dust where practical. Keep windows closed when outdoor air clearly triggers symptoms, and wash hands after touching pets. Lubricating drops can ease surface discomfort. Seek urgent care for eye pain, vision change, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure or severe swelling. Ask whether your symptoms fit allergic eye disease, whether testing is useful, and which measures or medicines are appropriate. Record the setting, season, pets, dust exposure and nasal symptoms around each flare so the clinician can look for a pattern.
