Dry, itchy eyes: what to know

Dry, itchy eyes often result from allergy or surface irritation, while pain, light sensitivity or vision change requires prompt care. Air conditioning, wind, smoke, prolonged screen use and contact lenses can worsen the dry feeling. Itching commonly encourages rubbing, which can further irritate the eye surface.

Allergic Conjunctivitis commonly causes itching with watering and redness. Allergic Rhinitis can occur at the same time, with sneezing or a runny nose. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy may produce symptoms after exposure. A gritty feeling without much redness can reflect dryness or irritation, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Take screen breaks, blink regularly and reduce direct airflow from fans or air conditioning. Wear glasses rather than contact lenses while the eyes are irritated. A cool compress can ease itching; preservative-free lubricating drops may help dryness when suitable. Avoid smoke and do not share eye drops. Obtain urgent eye care for significant pain, new blurred or reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, an injured eye, a chemical splash or thick discharge.
