Dry, itchy eyelids and under-eyes: what to know

Dry, itchy eyelids and under-eyes commonly reflect irritation or allergy, but swelling, pain or vision change needs assessment. New cosmetics, cleansers, eye drops, dust, pollen or pet dander can irritate delicate skin. Rubbing can increase redness, dryness and puffiness.

Allergic Conjunctivitis can cause itchy, watery or red eyes alongside irritated eyelid skin. Allergic Rhinitis may bring sneezing and a runny or blocked nose. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy are possible triggers when symptoms follow particular environments. A rash that repeatedly returns after a product may be contact irritation or allergy rather than an eye infection.

Stop any newly introduced eye or facial products and avoid rubbing. Apply a cool, clean compress over closed eyes, and cleanse gently with plain lukewarm water. Keep fragrances, smoke and dust away from the area. Do not put skin creams or steroid products into the eye unless prescribed. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, a severe one-sided swelling, injury, pus-like discharge or difficulty opening the eye. Emergency help is needed if eyelid swelling comes with breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue. Arrange review if the rash persists, spreads or keeps returning despite removing likely irritants.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, irritation or another eyelid condition, and whether you need an eye examination or allergy treatment. Bring a list of products used near the eyes and describe when symptoms occur, including after cleaning, outdoor exposure or contact with animals.
