Dry heaving and food poisoning
Dry heaving during food poisoning means your body is trying to vomit, but little or no stomach contents come up. Nausea, cramping, diarrhoea and fever may occur at the same time. Repeated retching can make the throat sore and can worsen dehydration, especially when you cannot keep fluids down.
What it may mean
Foodborne illness can inflame the stomach and intestines, triggering the vomiting reflex. Dry heaving can continue after the stomach has emptied. It does not by itself show how severe the infection is or identify the specific food responsible. Other causes, such as reflux or another stomach illness, can also cause nausea and retching.
What you can do now
Rest and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Large gulps may trigger more retching. Once nausea eases, try bland foods in small portions and avoid alcohol, very fatty meals and foods that worsen symptoms. Wash your hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while you have diarrhoea or vomiting. Oral Rehydration Therapy may help replace lost fluids; a clinician can consider IV Fluid Therapy if drinking is not possible.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent care if you cannot keep fluids down, become faint or confused, pass very little urine, have severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or trouble breathing. A high fever, marked weakness, or symptoms that are not settling also deserves medical assessment. Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a long-term illness can become dehydrated more quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what fluid plan suits you, whether your symptoms fit food poisoning, and which warning signs should prompt urgent review. Mention when the retching began, whether you have diarrhoea or fever, what you have managed to drink, and any recent meals or sick contacts.
