Dry, flaky, itchy skin in the female pubic area

The outer pubic skin can react to shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat, pads, fragranced washes, wipes, or laundry products. Itch and scale on the outer skin may fit irritant or allergic dermatitis; recurring itch can also occur with [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) or [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/). Burning with urination, unusual discharge or odour, blisters, ulcers, or pain may point to infection or another condition rather than simple dryness.

Rinse the external area with lukewarm water and avoid scented products, douching, wipes, and scrubbing. Pat dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and pause shaving or waxing until the skin settles. Do not put steroid, antifungal, or antiseptic products inside the vagina or on delicate tissue unless prescribed. Arrange a medical review for symptoms that persist, recur, interfere with sleep, or involve the vulva. Seek prompt care for sores, blisters, marked swelling, bleeding unrelated to a period, severe pain, fever, pelvic pain, or difficulty passing urine. If symptoms began after sexual contact, assessment can help identify infections and guide testing or treatment.

Ask whether the affected skin is irritated, eczematous, infected, or affected by another vulval condition; which products are safe externally; and whether testing is needed.
