Dry flaky skin on an eyelid: what to know

Eyelid skin is thin and can react to a product that is tolerated elsewhere. New cosmetics, eye drops, cleansers, nail products transferred by touch, fragrances, and airborne irritants may cause contact dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis can cause itchy, dry patches, while psoriasis may affect the eyelids as part of a wider pattern. Flaking along the lashes may also occur with eyelid-margin inflammation. Dryness does not by itself show which condition is present, and rubbing can worsen swelling and irritation.

Stop recently introduced eye cosmetics or skincare and avoid rubbing, peeling, or applying household remedies near the eye. Clean gently with lukewarm water and a soft, clean cloth; do not put cleanser into the eye. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a plain emollient is appropriate for the eyelid and where it may safely be used. Do not use steroid or antibiotic creams near the eye unless prescribed for that location. Keep towels and cosmetics personal, and replace products that may be contaminated.

Get prompt medical advice for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked redness of the eye itself, pus, severe swelling, or a rash with blisters. Arrange review if the eyelid remains scaly, cracks, recurs, or affects both eyes despite removing possible irritants. Emergency help is needed for sudden facial swelling with breathing trouble.
