Dry flaky skin in the ears: what to know

Flaking on the outer ear or at the opening may follow dry weather, frequent washing, headphones, hearing devices, or contact with hair and skin products. Atopic dermatitis can make the skin itchy and reactive. Asteatotic eczema may produce marked dryness and cracking. Psoriasis can affect the ear rim or extend into the canal with scale. If the canal itself is inflamed, symptoms may include fullness, pain, tenderness, discharge, or reduced hearing; these features need an examination rather than home scraping.

Clean only the outer ear gently and dry it after bathing. Do not insert cotton buds, fingernails, hairpins, or flakes-removing tools into the canal. Avoid pouring oils, moisturisers, or household remedies into the ear unless a clinician has advised it. Keep headphones and hearing devices clean and take a break from an accessory that seems to rub the area. A plain moisturiser may be used on dry outer-ear skin, away from the canal opening.

Arrange prompt medical care for ear pain, discharge, bleeding, foul odour, new hearing reduction, dizziness, or swelling. Fever or redness spreading onto the face needs urgent attention. Even without these symptoms, persistent canal flaking, repeated episodes, or symptoms after inserting an object should be assessed by a clinician.
