Dry flaky skin around the eyes

Eyelid skin may become dry after rubbing, cold or dry air, or contact with cosmetics, cleanser, hair dye, nail products, or fragranced creams transferred by touch. Atopic dermatitis can cause itchy, recurrent eyelid patches. Psoriasis may affect the eyelids along with other typical areas, while asteatotic eczema is another dry-skin pattern. The eye area is sensitive, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Stop newly introduced eye cosmetics and fragranced products, and do not rub or peel the scale. Clean gently with lukewarm water, keeping cleanser out of the eyes. Apply a small amount of a bland, fragrance-free emollient to the surrounding skin, not into the eye or along the inner lid. Avoid steroid creams, acids, essential oils, and medicated products near the eyes unless prescribed for that site.

Arrange review if the rash persists, keeps recurring, affects both eyelids after a product exposure, or spreads beyond the eye area. Seek prompt medical help for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, marked swelling, pus, fever, or a blistering rash. A dermatologist or eye professional can check whether the skin or the eye itself is involved.
