Dry eyes sensitive to light: what should you know?

When the tear film is uneven, blinking and bright light can feel irritating. Burning, grittiness, watering and fluctuating vision may occur together. Screens, wind, smoke, air conditioning and contact lenses can worsen the feeling.

Itchy Eyes or Red Eye may accompany irritation, allergy or infection. The pattern matters: one-sided pain, marked redness, discharge, or reduced vision is less typical of simple dryness and should be assessed.

Reduce glare, take breaks from close-up screens, blink fully and avoid direct airflow. Wear sunglasses outdoors, but do not stay in a dark room all day. Remove contact lenses if they feel uncomfortable and use lubricating drops only as directed.

Avoid rubbing your eyes and do not use another person’s medication. A GP Consultation can help decide whether you need an eye examination or a different treatment. Keep a note of triggers and whether symptoms affect one or both eyes.

Get urgent help for severe eye pain, sudden vision loss, a very red eye, injury or chemical exposure, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange prompt review if light sensitivity persists, discharge develops, or ordinary indoor light becomes difficult to tolerate.
