Dry eyes and runny nose: what should you know?

Allergic Rhinitis may cause a watery or runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes and watering; House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy are possible triggers. Eyes can still feel dry when tears evaporate quickly or when rubbing and inflammation disturb the eye surface.

A Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 may bring a runny nose with sore throat, cough, fever, aches or tiredness. Sinusitis may cause nasal blockage, facial pressure and thicker discharge. A runny nose does not by itself identify any one condition.

Avoid smoke, strong fragrances, dust and direct air-conditioning. Wash hands, use a clean saline nasal rinse if suitable for you, and keep fluids nearby. For eye dryness, take screen breaks, blink often and consider lubricating drops after checking with a pharmacist, especially if you wear contact lenses.

Notice whether symptoms follow pets, bedding, outdoor exposure or contact with someone unwell. Do not share towels or eye products. If symptoms interfere with sleep, work or breathing, arrange a clinical review for tailored treatment advice.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, severe eye pain, vision loss, confusion, dehydration, or a very unwell appearance. Prompt assessment is sensible for persistent high fever, worsening facial pain, or symptoms that steadily worsen rather than improve.
