Short answer

Dry dead skin on the feet is usually thickened outer skin from dryness or repeated pressure, but cracks, itch, or inflammation can signal another problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Moisturise
Apply a thick emollient after washing, concentrating on heels and soles.
Do not cut
Blades and forceful filing can create wounds and worsen cracks.

Why feet develop thick dry skin

The soles carry pressure and friction, so the outer layer may become rough or callused. Dry air, long hot showers, harsh soap, and open footwear can remove moisture and leave the heels or sides of the feet scaly. Deep heel fissures can be tender and may catch on socks.

Asteatotic eczema can produce very dry, cracked skin, while atopic dermatitis may bring itch and recurring irritation. Psoriasis can create thicker, well-defined scaling and may affect other sites. Itch between the toes, peeling, or a spreading rash can also need assessment for a different cause. Appearance and symptoms together are more useful than the word dead skin.

Safe foot care

Wash with warm rather than hot water, pat dry, and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Give extra attention to the heels and soles, but keep spaces between the toes dry. Wear comfortable footwear and socks that reduce rubbing.

Do not cut thick skin with a blade or aggressively file cracked areas. Emollient therapy can soften the outer layer and support the skin barrier when used regularly. If a crack is open, painful, or surrounded by redness, ask a clinician how to care for it rather than applying harsh acids or peeling products.

When to seek care

Arrange a review for bleeding fissures, increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or redness that spreads. Seek advice when scaling persists despite moisturising, the rash is very itchy, nails change, or similar patches appear on the hands, elbows, knees, or elsewhere. People with diabetes, reduced foot sensation, or circulation problems should seek professional guidance early for broken skin.

Questions for your doctor

Is this pressure-related thickening, eczema, psoriasis, or another cause? Which moisturiser and application schedule should I use? Is it safe to file the area? How should I protect a fissure, and which symptoms would need prompt review?

Questions people ask

Is it safe to peel dead skin from my feet?

Gentle washing and moisturising are safer than peeling or cutting; aggressive removal can cause fissures and infection.

Why do my heels crack?

Dryness combined with pressure and stretching can split thick heel skin, especially when the barrier is not well moisturised.
