What should you know about dry dark spots on skin?

A dark patch can remain after a spot, rash, scratch, or other inflammation has settled; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sun spots and melasma can also create brown or grey areas, often on exposed parts of the face. Tinea versicolor may cause patches with fine scale and altered colour, particularly on the trunk. Dryness can make a patch look rougher or more noticeable without explaining the pigment by itself.

Look at the pattern rather than judging the colour alone. Note the border, surface scale, symmetry, itch, tenderness, and whether the mark is changing. A photograph taken in consistent light can help you describe progression during a clinical review.

Cleanse gently, moisturise regularly, and avoid scrubbing, picking, or unregulated lightening products. Protect exposed skin from sunlight with shade, clothing, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for your skin. Ongoing irritation can deepen pigment, so pause products that sting or cause peeling.

A dermatologist can identify the cause before suggesting treatment. Depending on the finding, options may include a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment. These procedures are not interchangeable and can worsen pigment when used on an undiagnosed or irritated patch.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a spot changes quickly, develops an irregular border, bleeds, crusts, becomes persistently painful, or forms a firm raised area. Seek review for a new patch that does not settle, widespread scaling, or pigment change after a medication or chemical exposure. Rapid swelling, blistering, or severe discomfort warrants prompt attention.
