Short answer

Dry, cracked, peeling feet usually improve with gentle cleansing, regular moisturising, and reducing friction, but persistent or spreading changes need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Heels can crack when thick, dry skin loses flexibility and pressure pulls the surface apart. Peeling between the toes, scaling on the soles, burning, or itch can also occur with athlete’s foot. Repeated sweating, enclosed footwear, pool changing rooms, harsh products, and friction can keep the surface irritated. Nail changes such as thickening, discoloration, or debris under the nail can occur alongside Nail Fungus, but peeling foot skin alone does not establish that diagnosis.

The distribution matters: heel fissures suggest pressure and dryness, while fine scale across the sole or peeling between toes raises a different possibility. A clinician can distinguish these patterns and check for secondary infection.

Care steps

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and dry carefully between the toes. Apply a thick bland moisturiser to the heels and other dry areas after washing; keep the spaces between toes dry if they are peeling or soggy. Wear breathable socks, change them when damp, and choose shoes that do not rub. Do not cut fissures with blades or aggressively remove thick skin. Avoid sharing towels, socks, or footwear while an infectious cause is possible.

When to get medical help

Arrange an assessment if peeling persists despite consistent care, repeatedly returns, affects the nails, or spreads to the hands. Seek prompt care for warmth, increasing redness, swelling, pus, fever, or a painful crack that is not closing. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or immune suppression should have foot breaks in the skin assessed early.

Useful questions

Ask whether the pattern suggests dryness, dermatitis, or fungus; whether a skin or nail sample is useful; which moisturiser is suitable; and how to protect the feet during work, exercise, or humid weather. Tell the clinician about nail changes, itching between toes, and treatments already tried.

Questions people ask

Why are my heels cracked but my toes are not peeling?

Pressure and thick dry heel skin can cause fissures without affecting the toes. Footwear, standing, and skin texture can contribute.

Can peeling feet affect the nails?

A fungal skin problem can coexist with Nail Fungus, especially when nail thickening or discoloration is present, but an examination is needed to tell.
