Dry cough, stuffy nose and sore throat

A common cold, influenza, and COVID-19 can inflame the nose and throat and trigger cough. Allergic rhinitis may cause a blocked or runny nose with throat irritation, often after exposure to dust, pollen, or animals. Acid reflux can add a cough or sore throat but does not usually explain nasal blockage by itself. Strep throat and tonsillitis more often cause prominent throat pain, while glandular fever may bring marked fatigue and swollen glands. These symptoms do not identify one condition on their own.

Drink fluids, rest, and use saline nasal spray or rinses as directed. Warm drinks, honey for suitable ages, and lozenges may soothe the throat. Avoid smoke, vaping, and strong scents. Wash hands and improve ventilation if an infection is possible. A pharmacist can advise about pain relief or a decongestant after checking your age, blood pressure, pregnancy status, and other medicines; follow label instructions and avoid combining products with the same ingredient.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, blue lips, inability to swallow fluids, or swelling that rapidly worsens. Arrange medical advice if fever persists, symptoms worsen after initial improvement, facial pain is severe, or the cough continues beyond the other symptoms. Testing may be appropriate when COVID-19, influenza, or strep throat is suspected.
