Dry cough and sore throat: what should you know?

Short answer
A dry cough with a sore throat often reflects irritation or a respiratory infection, but allergies and acid reflux can also contribute.

Dry cough and sore throat at a glance
A dry cough produces little or no mucus. Repeated coughing can further irritate the throat, creating a cycle of tickling, soreness, and more coughing. The pattern, accompanying symptoms, and how long it lasts help a clinician assess the cause.
What it may mean
A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, or strep throat may cause throat pain and coughing alongside fever, tiredness, blocked or runny nose, swollen tonsils, or body aches. Most people with a common cold develop symptoms that improve with time, although the cough may linger after other symptoms settle.
Allergic rhinitis can cause throat irritation from nasal drainage, while acid reflux may irritate the throat and trigger coughing, especially after meals or when lying down. Glandular fever is another possible cause of a persistent sore throat with marked fatigue or swollen neck glands. These symptoms overlap, so they do not identify one condition on their own.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose warm drinks or cool foods according to what feels soothing. Humidified air, saline nasal spray, and avoiding smoke, vaping, dust, and strong fragrances may reduce irritation. Honey can soothe a cough for adults and children over twelve months; never give honey to an infant under twelve months.
Follow the label directions for any over-the-counter medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat viral illnesses and should only be used when prescribed for a suitable bacterial infection. Consider staying home and limiting close contact while you have fever or feel unwell.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, blue or grey lips, or rapidly worsening swelling in the throat or neck. Contact a clinician promptly for chest pain, coughing blood, a very high or persistent fever, severe one-sided throat pain, or symptoms that are getting worse rather than easing.
Arrange a medical review if the sore throat keeps returning, the cough persists beyond the expected recovery period, or you have a weakened immune system. A clinician may examine your throat, listen to your chest, review exposures and medicines, and decide whether testing is useful.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: What features point toward an infection, allergy, reflux, or another cause? Do I need a throat or respiratory test? Which medicines are suitable with my health conditions? What changes should prompt urgent care?

Questions people ask
Can a dry cough make a sore throat worse?
Yes. Repeated coughing can irritate the throat lining and increase soreness, even after the original trigger starts to improve.
When should a dry cough and sore throat be checked?
Seek prompt advice for breathing or swallowing problems, dehydration, chest pain, coughing blood, severe worsening pain, or symptoms that are not settling.
Does a dry cough always mean an infection?
No. Allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, smoke, dry air, and other irritants can also cause a dry cough and sore throat.
