Dry cough and sneezing: what should you know?

Sneezing is a reflex that clears the nose. A dry cough is a protective reflex from the throat or airways that does not bring up mucus. Together, they can occur when pollen, dust, pet particles, smoke, perfume or dry air irritates the upper airways.

Allergic rhinitis commonly brings repeated sneezing, an itchy or runny nose and symptoms that recur around a trigger. A common cold may add a blocked nose, sore throat, tiredness or a changing cough. House dust mite allergy can be worse in bedrooms, while pet allergy may flare after contact or in rooms where an animal spends time.

Move away from smoke, sprays and strong scents, drink fluids, and use gentle throat-soothing measures. Wash hands and avoid sharing cups if a cold seems possible. Keep a brief record of timing, places, exposures and other symptoms; this can reveal an allergy pattern.

Reduce bedroom dust, wash bedding regularly, and keep pets out of the sleeping area if those settings trigger symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether Allergy Medication is suitable, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or are treating a child.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction after food, medicine or an insect sting. Arrange a medical review if the cough keeps returning, disrupts sleep, comes with fever or chest pain, or does not settle as expected.
