Dry chapped skin around the mouth

Licking the lips or wiping the mouth repeatedly wets and dries the surrounding skin, leaving it vulnerable to cracking. Toothpaste, fragrance, flavouring, and cosmetics can irritate the area. Atopic Dermatitis may affect the face, while Asteatotic Eczema and Psoriasis can cause dry scale elsewhere as well. The appearance alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water and avoid scrubs, fragranced products, and licking the area. Apply a plain protective ointment to the skin around the mouth, especially after eating and before sleep; Emollient Therapy may be discussed if dryness is recurring. Use a soft cloth rather than rubbing, and introduce only one new product at a time.

Book an assessment if cracking persists despite gentle care, repeatedly returns at the corners, or is accompanied by a rash, crusting, blisters, swelling, or significant pain. Seek urgent help if facial swelling affects breathing or swallowing. A clinician can distinguish irritation from eczema, infection, or an allergy and select an appropriate treatment.
