Dry calloused skin around fingernails

The cuticle and nearby skin can become rough when moisture and protective oils are repeatedly removed. Small splits may sting, especially after water or cleaning products touch them. Asteatotic eczema or Atopic Dermatitis can also cause dry, scaly skin; Psoriasis may produce thicker, sharply defined scale or changes to the nail itself. A symptom does not identify one condition on its own.

Use a fragrance-free cleanser, lukewarm water, and pat the hands dry. Apply a thick cream or ointment to the nail folds after washing and before bed; Emollient Therapy can help restore the surface barrier. Wear protective gloves for wet work, with a cotton layer if sweating is a problem. Do not cut or pull the cuticles, and pause products that burn or worsen scaling.

Arrange a medical review if redness spreads, swelling or warmth develops, pus appears, pain becomes marked, or a crack keeps reopening. Seek prompt care for a rapidly worsening finger, fever, or difficulty moving it. Persistent thickening, nail lifting, or changes affecting several nails also deserve an examination because treatment depends on the cause.
