Dry and Swollen Lips

Lips can lose moisture from wind, sun, dehydration, lip licking, saliva, or irritating products. Swelling may develop after a bite, injury, cosmetic, dental product, medicine, or food exposure. A sudden episode involving the lips can be a presentation of Angioedema, especially when swelling also affects the tongue, face, or throat. Crusting, blisters, pus, fever, or a persistent sore point to a different process that needs examination.

Stop any newly introduced lip balm, lipstick, toothpaste, mouthwash, or cosmetic until the cause is clearer. Rinse gently with water, avoid licking or biting the lips, and apply a plain, fragrance-free ointment. Choose cool fluids and soft foods if movement is uncomfortable. Do not apply harsh antiseptics, exfoliants, or topical products containing fragrance. Note when the swelling began and what you ate, used, or took beforehand; that timeline can help a clinician identify a trigger.

Call emergency services immediately for lip swelling with tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, dizziness, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt medical advice when swelling is painful, rapidly increasing, associated with fever or pus, follows an injury, or does not settle after removing a suspected irritant.

Ask whether the episode could be allergic swelling, contact irritation, infection, or another cause. Bring a list of medicines and products, including anything used on the lips, and ask what to use if the swelling happens again.
