Short answer
A dry, sore throat is often linked with a viral illness or irritation and can be eased with fluids, rest and simple throat care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First measures
- Fluids, rest, humidified air and avoiding smoke
- Swallowing warning
- Inability to swallow saliva needs urgent help
The main points
A dry, sore throat is often linked with a viral illness or irritation and can be eased with fluids, rest and simple throat care. A blocked nose, mouth breathing, dry air, smoke and voice strain can worsen the sensation. The pattern of pain, fever, cough, nasal symptoms and swallowing difficulty helps guide the next step.
Possible causes
A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 may cause throat soreness with cough, congestion, fever or body aches. Allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat through nasal inflammation or mucus drainage. Acid reflux may cause a dry, hoarse or burning throat, particularly after meals or when lying down. Tonsillitis, strep throat and glandular fever can produce stronger pain and swollen glands; symptoms alone cannot confirm which infection is present.
Relief at home
Drink water often and try warm broth or cool drinks. Gargling with warm salty water may soothe an adult throat; do not swallow the mixture. Rest your voice, avoid smoking and use humidified air if the room is dry. Soft foods may be easier to swallow. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief, taking your age, pregnancy, allergies and other medicines into account. Antibiotics are not useful for every sore throat.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, severe dehydration, confusion or a muffled voice. Arrange medical review for a severe or persistent sore throat, high fever, rash, pus on the tonsils, tender neck glands, repeated episodes or symptoms after close exposure to infection. Testing may be needed before targeted treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this fit a viral illness, reflux, allergy or bacterial throat infection? Do I need testing? Which pain-relief options are safe for me, and what change should prompt urgent review?

Questions people ask
Can reflux cause a dry, sore throat?
Yes. Reflux can irritate the throat and may also cause hoarseness, a burning feeling, cough or symptoms that are worse after meals or when lying down.
Do all sore throats need antibiotics?
No. Many are caused by viruses or irritation. A clinician may recommend testing when the examination and symptoms suggest a bacterial infection.
