Dry and Itchy Skin in Pregnancy: What to Know

Short answer
Dry and itchy skin in pregnancy is often related to a changing skin barrier, stretching, heat or irritation, but persistent or intense itching needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Heat, stretching, dry air, fragranced products and rough fabrics
- Useful first step
- Fragrance-free moisturiser after a lukewarm wash
- Prompt review
- Intense itch, palm or sole itching, or itch without a rash
What it can mean
Pregnancy can make skin feel tighter and more easily irritated. Hot showers, fragranced products, dry air, sweating and rough fabrics may increase itching. Eczema, contact dermatitis, hives and other conditions can also appear or flare during this time. Itching on the palms or soles, itching that is widespread without a visible rash, or symptoms that are worse at night deserve particular attention because they may have causes beyond simple dryness.
A rash does not identify its cause by appearance alone. The location, timing, medicines, exposures and associated symptoms help a clinician decide whether this is a barrier problem, an inflammatory condition such as Atopic Dermatitis, or another diagnosis.
What you can do
Use lukewarm rather than hot water, keep showers brief, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser soon after patting the skin dry. Choose loose cotton clothing, avoid scratching where possible, and switch away from newly introduced soaps, detergents or perfumes. A cool compress can calm a particularly itchy area.
Check every medicine, cream and essential oil with your maternity clinician or dermatologist before using it. They can recommend a pregnancy-appropriate product and assess whether a condition such as Contact Dermatitis or Asteatotic Eczema needs targeted treatment.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or rapidly worsening itch, itch without a rash, itching concentrated on the palms or soles, or symptoms that disturb sleep. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, fever, or a painful rash. Report dark urine, pale stools or yellowing of the eyes or skin as well.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what products are suitable for your stage of pregnancy, whether the pattern suggests eczema or another condition, and whether any examination or blood testing is needed. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and recent product changes, plus where the itching occurs and when it is strongest.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy itself cause itchy skin?
Yes. Stretching, heat and changes in the skin barrier can contribute, but intense, widespread or unusual itching should be assessed.
Can I use an anti-itch cream while pregnant?
Ask your maternity clinician or dermatologist first, because suitability depends on the ingredient, body area and pregnancy stage.
