Dry and itchy skin around the eyes: what to know

The skin around the eyes is thin and can react to cosmetics, cleansers, hair products, contact-lens solutions, or frequent rubbing. Itching with watery, red eyes can occur with allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic rhinitis, house dust mite allergy, and pet allergy may bring eye symptoms alongside sneezing or a runny nose. Dryness can also be linked with screen use, wind, low humidity, or eyelid inflammation. The pattern and appearance matter: a rash on the skin is different from irritation on the eye surface, and neither alone identifies a single diagnosis.

Stop any new product near the eyes and rinse the area with lukewarm water. Apply a cool, clean compress without rubbing. Keep hands clean, avoid sharing towels, and pause eye makeup or contact lenses while symptoms are active. A plain moisturiser made for sensitive skin may help the surrounding skin, but keep creams out of the eye unless a clinician advises them.
