Drugs That Cause Erythema Multiforme

Erythema multiforme is an inflammatory skin reaction. It often creates round lesions with several zones, giving them a target-like appearance, commonly on the backs of the hands, arms, legs, or face. The rash may be mildly itchy or burning. Some episodes follow infections such as herpes simplex; medicines can also be a trigger. A clinician will consider the timing, distribution, appearance, and whether the mouth, eyes, or genital lining is involved. It is different from Stevens-Johnson syndrome, but extensive blistering, skin pain, peeling, or significant mucosal injury should be treated as an urgent problem rather than labelled at home.

Write down every recent medicine, including occasional pain relievers, antibiotics, supplements, and dose changes. Do not restart a suspected trigger without medical advice. Use gentle cleansing, protect lesions from friction, and avoid picking blisters. A clinician may recommend symptom relief based on the affected areas; topical corticosteroids can be one treatment option for selected skin inflammation, while antiviral treatment may be considered when an infection is the trigger. Those choices require an individual assessment.

Seek same-day medical care for a rapidly spreading rash, skin pain, blisters, peeling, fever, difficulty eating or drinking, mouth sores, painful red eyes, vision change, or genital sores. Go to emergency care for breathing difficulty, faintness, or extensive skin involvement. Eye symptoms deserve particular attention because inflammation near the eye can threaten the eye surface.
