Drugs that can cause rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is muscle breakdown that releases muscle contents into the blood. Statins used to lower cholesterol are a familiar example of a medicine group linked with this problem, but risk may also involve other prescription medicines, combinations, interactions, or non-prescription products. Dehydration, heavy exertion, an infection, and reduced kidney function can add stress. The presence of muscle soreness after exercise does not identify the cause by itself.

A healthcare professional will consider timing and the full medication list rather than focusing on one product alone. Blood tests can assess muscle injury and kidney stress, while urine testing may provide additional information.

Call the clinician who prescribed the medicine if new muscle symptoms appear, especially after a dose change or a new combination. Record when symptoms began, where they are, how they are changing, and whether urine looks darker or is less frequent. Avoid strenuous activity until you have advice, keep ordinary fluids going unless a clinician has restricted them, and do not add supplements or leftover medicines to manage the problem. Take the medicine packaging or a written list to the assessment.

Go to urgent care for intense or rapidly worsening muscle pain, profound weakness, significant swelling, dark urine, reduced urination, confusion, fainting, or breathing difficulty. Kidney complications can develop even when the original muscle symptom seemed limited. Emergency symptoms warrant immediate services.

Ask whether the timing fits a medicine reaction, which tests are needed, whether any combination should be changed, and what warning signs should trigger immediate reassessment.
