What should you know about drug related rash?

The rash may be an immune response, irritation, or a reaction made more noticeable by sunlight. It can appear as itchy patches, hives, red spots, or scaling, and it may begin on the trunk, face, or areas that received a topical product. The timing can be early or delayed, so a medicine taken for some time may still be relevant.

Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, and scabies can resemble a medication rash. Distribution, itch, exposure history, and examination help separate them.

Write down all medicines, supplements, creams, and recent dose changes, then contact the prescriber or pharmacist. Photograph the rash in good light and note its start, spread, itch, pain, fever, and any new sun exposure. Avoid adding unfamiliar skincare products while the cause is being assessed.

Do not stop an essential prescription or reuse a suspected product without instructions. A clinician may recommend symptom relief after deciding whether the medicine should be changed and whether another skin condition fits better.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, faintness, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread blisters, peeling skin, severe skin pain, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Fever, facial swelling, or rapid progression requires urgent assessment even if the rash is not painful.

Ask whether the pattern fits a drug reaction, which product is suspected, whether an alternative is needed, what can safely relieve itch, and what symptoms should trigger emergency care.
