What should you know about drug induced cheilitis?

Cheilitis means inflamed lips. A medicine may contribute through irritation, an immune reaction, dryness, or increased sensitivity to sunlight. The lips can become rough, flaky, tender, split at the corners, or swollen. Similar symptoms can follow lip licking, saliva exposure, toothpaste or cosmetics, infection, nutritional problems, or another form of dermatitis. A clinician reviews the timing of the medicine, products touching the lips, and whether the mouth or skin elsewhere is involved.

Use a bland, fragrance-free ointment or balm regularly, especially after eating and before sleep. Avoid licking, biting, peeling flakes, fragranced lip products, and any new cosmetic applied to the area. Keep a record of medicines and recent product changes, then contact the prescriber before stopping an essential medicine. Depending on the cause and examination, care may include emollient therapy or a short prescribed course of topical corticosteroids.

Obtain urgent help for rapidly increasing lip or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Arrange a clinical review for persistent cracking, bleeding, crusting, pus, severe pain, mouth sores, or symptoms that continue despite gentle protection. Recurrent inflammation may need a closer review of medicines and contact exposures.
